Guyana: A man, aged 38, who was a minibus driver and a female passenger who was travelling in his vehicle, lost their lives in a road accident which took place on September 6, Tuesday at Good Hope, East Coast Demerara (ECD).

The deceased male has been identified as Andrew Albert, a resident of Lamaha Park, Georgetown.

According to the police officials, Albert is a former police officer, and his father stated that his son was an employee of ExxonMobil Guyana and used to operate the minibus during his spare time.

The deceased woman has also been identified as Annalisa Lackhan, aged 38.

Lackhan, a resident of Gopie Street, Buxton North, ECD, was a passenger in the minibus.

As per the police reports, the Route 44 minibus was moving up the ECD and, during the process, overtook a motor pickup.

The eyewitnesses stated that the same motor pickup then speeded up behind the minibus and crashed the vehicle from behind.

This reportedly resulted in the minibus crashing into a truck and then into a horse-cart. The minibus driver then started to lose control of the vehicle, resulting in it overturning many times before coming to a stop.

The passer-bys had to use a saw to get the victims out of that minibus.

Along with the two deceased, at least three persons are reported to be in critical condition.

As a result of the crash, many individuals who were in the minibus obtained injuries and were taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) to seek further medical attention. The dead bodies of Andrew Albert and Annalisa Lackhan are in the morgue of GPHC, awaiting a post-mortem examination.

The police have taken the driver of the motor pickup into custody, who hit the minibus from behind, to assist the police officials in further investigation.
